From Wasteland to Thriving Architectural Kitchen Garden

Completed in 2021, this project transformed a gravelly, underused front garden into a vibrant and productive growing space. A series of oak planters, complemented by unusual curved corrugated steel containers, create a structured yet playful composition. These house a variety of edibles and ornamentals, including seasonal vegetables grown in no-dig beds. The design takes cues from the tradition of the potager — a garden that balances beauty with productivity — while introducing a distinctly architectural layout. Pathways and planting beds are arranged to guide movement, frame views, and maximise sunlight exposure for growth.

The result is a thriving, low-maintenance garden that functions as both a welcoming entrance and a year-round source of produce. Featured in the National Garden Scheme 2024, it demonstrates how small front gardens can be reimagined as multifunctional, ecologically rich spaces.
